Traditionally, our conversations around animal rescue are focused on what we can do for homeless pets. But as any pet owner can tell you (and will, happily, for hours on end), the far more powerful result of animal rescue is often the impact our pets have on us.

Austin is the largest no-kill city in the United States, and for many of us, our fur families are as near and dear as our biological families. In particular, it’s the rescue dogs—with all their quirks and neuroses and their boundless capacity for love—that enchant us most.

Through essays and photos from adopters, Austin Brown Dogs: The Shelter Dogs Who Rescue Us celebrates that incredible bond between Austinites and our rescue dogs.

This book supports local rescues. The editor, Sarah Welch, is committed to donating the majority of her proceeds from Austin Brown Dogs to Classic Canines and Friends of Austin Animal Center. Classic Canines is an advocacy group for senior dogs seven and older, and Friends of Austin Animal Center is an all-volunteer organization that supports Austin Animal Center with programs designed to remove barriers to adoption, help responsible owners keep their pets, improve quality of life for animals at the shelter, and support the foster and volunteer network around AAC.
